The Velvet Devil Merlot 2016 ($10.99)
One of the most interesting interviews I have conducted in the wine industry was with Charles Smith, owner of Charles Smith Wines. The former rock band manager turned winemaker has developed a knack for turning out great wines from Washington state.
Smith’s entry level wines are not only popular for their flavor, but because at their price, they can please the whole crowd without breaking the bank.
For a great weeknight wine or for ordering event-sized quantities, the merlot in the Charles Smith portfolio, The Velvet Devil, is a solid choice. Velvet Devil is full bodied with firm tannins that is uber-dry but balanced by plum, semi-sweet chocolate and cracked green peppercorn notes.
